The McLaren driver just pipped team-mate and title rival the Australian for the fastest time in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who grabbed the championship lead from Piastri by just one point after taking the win in Mexico City a fortnight back, beat the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Before then, Oscar Piastri had been the leading McLaren for most of the session before sprint qualifying due at 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in the points battle, lying with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his team followed a unique setup. His teammate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to have an incident, if briefly, when he rotated at corner four during the early running. The Japanese lost control over the curbs on exit before spinning across the run-off area, and was lucky to get away with just a light touch of the wall. Ferrari's the seven-time champion also lost it, at the very end of the practice, turning around through the quick descending Mergulho turn before the final corner on to the start-finish straight. Hamilton ended the session in 19th, just behind teammate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were well clear of the remaining drivers, with the German's car in third, 0.619secs behind Piastri's best. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto in front of the Mercedes of Russell and Alpine's Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
